School Name
Richard Ivey School of Business
Unique Factors
The MBA will be the first program to fully reflect the School’s new approach to management education – Cross-Enterprise Leadership. Ivey will offer a 12-month MBA format, which is already the norm in many parts of Europe and is offered by highly regarded business schools such as INSEAD and IMD.
There will be two MBA cohorts per year. The spring cohort will commence in late May 2006 and the fall class will commence in late October 2006.
The core of the program focuses on three elements of Cross-Enterprise Leadership: thinking, acting, and leading.
The first element focuses on understanding management and business thinking. Ivey wants to challenge the way future managers think about business. The School’s future managers will think Cross-Enterprise.
The second element focuses on action. A critical element before a manager can act is understanding the “anatomy” of an enterprise. There are a number of business processes. By understanding these processes managers can better understand how enterprises operate to create value. With this understanding, they can focus on how they should make decisions and operate at a Cross-Enterprise level.
The third element of the program focuses on leadership, gaining a Cross-Enterprise orientation and dealing with Cross-Enterprise issues. Once Ivey has broadened the way future managers think and provide a foundation of how businesses work, students will be ready to deal with Cross-Enterprise issues – with a focus on action and leadership, not merely “thinking” or understanding.
The Ivey MBA program is concentrated on four learning modules.
Module 1: Develop Your Leadership Competencies The first module will focus on the development of personal leadership competencies. It will help students better understand how to manage their careers and focus on a particular industry, allowing them to begin customizing their Ivey MBA experience from the outset and preparing them for re-entry to the job market.
This starts with an understanding of why firms exist, how an individual fits among the organization’s various stakeholders and how to manage the tensions among stakeholders. Students learn how decisions are made in the face of uncertainty and complexity and will focus on specific feedback on how to effectively communicate within an enterprise and how to be a better leader. Throughout the 12-month program, an emphasis is placed on learning teams, and this first module gives students the skills to work more effectively in these teams.
Module 2: Build Cross-Enterprise Management Skill In this second module, students will examine the organization’s key structures and processes, and how they are aligned with strategy. One day they may be following the flow of money through the company to understand how it fuels the business; the next day they may look at how products are transformed as they flow from raw materials through manufacturing to marketing, sales and distribution. They will examine how tolerances are managed, what quality means, and how these contribute to building organization-wide sustainable competitive advantage.
As students peer into the anatomy of the organization to gain a better understanding, the one element that remains constant is Cross-Enterprise Leadership™. This unique perspective provides insight into business processes such as control and audit, evaluation of risk and return, valuation, process quality and productivity management, supply chain management, market segmentation and new product development. It helps students understand why and how these processes work to achieve results.
Module 3: Compete Successfully in a Global Environment
The third module focuses on how an enterprise can compete successfully in a global environment. It examines the impact of macro trends including rapidly evolving political, economic, and societal factors; technological change; outsourcing and offshoring; and how to manage diversity in a global context. They will study how an enterprise can grow through alliances and partnerships. The module contains an international project assignment that can be completed through an optional two-week study trip to China or India.
Module 4: Excel through Cross-Enterprise Leadership™ The fourth module involves six weeks of elective courses whereby students can further customize their career path while responding to the needs of recruiters in key sectors such as financial services, investment banking, consulting and life science. A common denominator in all electives will be the application of Cross-Enterprise Leadership™.
There will also be sessions on such business issues as how to create value responsibly, how to engage emerging powers such as China and India, how to drive growth through innovation, and how to lead and achieve in a cross-enterprise manner.
Students will also share their learning from the Ivey Cross-Enterprise Field Project in which they’ve participated. Finally, the last week of the module will allow students to reflect on and celebrate their achievements within the program and look forward to their new careers.
