School Name
Thompson Rivers University School of Business and Economics
Unique Factors
The TRU MBA caters to the recent university graduate with minimal or no work experience. As well, the TRU MBA has adopted the phrase "Total MBA Experience" to represent the other many important features of the program besides curriculum. This combination makes attending the TRU MBA a truly enjoyable and enlightening experience for its students. Highlights outside the regular curriculum include: * MBA Speaker Series * Time between semesters for travel and family * Participation in business competitions * High-quality, newly-constructed facilities * Classmates from around the globe * Numerous social events * Professional linkages * Internship program * Beautiful surroundings The TRU MBA is an excellent program that offers students a highly applied curriculum with an emphasis on international business and the applications of technology in the workplace. New MBA facilities at TRU are some of the best in the country and the scenic surroundings in B.C.'s interior will make your stay in Kamloops a very enjoyable experience.
The TRU MBA will also be an excellent choice for International students who want to earn a graduate degree in hopes of taking knowledge of North American business practices and culture back to their home countries. It may also be an option for students who want to eventually immigrate to Canada or the U.S. TRU currently has a large contingent of International students at the undergraduate level and a very helpful international education department called TRU World, so International students should feel very welcome.
MBA Portfolio
Courses will be taught with a strong international focus and emphasis will be placed on applications of technology in business. This program will also make considerable use of the case approach along with business simulations, company visits, guest speakers, and consulting projects to further develop the students' skills.
Concentration
Concentrations will allow students to specialize either along functional lines such as marketing, finance, human resource management, or international business or industry lines such as advanced technology, natural resources, or tourism. Initially, the TRU MBA will only offer a Management Concentration, but it is committed to offering additional specializations in the future.
Internship Program:
Upon completion of the MBA program, interested graduates will have the option of competing for a limited number of domestic and international internship positions available through TRU's Co-operative Education Department. Competition for a limited number of positions will be intense and students are not guaranteed a placement, but they will provide successful students with an important "first step" in their business careers. Domestic students may get a chance to work overseas and gain valuable international business experience, while International students may learn important lessons about North American business practices that they can take back with them to their home countries or use to pursue a career elsewhere. These internships will vary in length from four months to a year, and student's work will be evaluated by the MBA Internship Coordinator. If successful, students will receive the Co-operative Education Internship Option designation on their MBA diplomas.
Part-time study
A limited number of students will be accepted into the MBA program each year on a part-time basis. They should be able to complete the program in four to six years depending on the number of courses taken each semester. No part-time student will be allowed to take longer than seven years without the permission of the MBA Committee. All courses will be scheduled during the day, so students will be expected to adjust their work or family schedules to attend. It has been TRU's experience with other programs that employers are willing to provide flexible hours so employees can attend classes. TRU plans to offer courses in the evening starting in 2006.
