Cape Breton University’s MBA in Community Economic Development is the only MBA program in the Americas that aims to deliver advanced business knowledge and skills in context of the community and the world. The MBA in CED offers a leading edge curriculum that includes all business subjects found in traditional MBA programs, and it also covers economic development, leadership, strategy, governance and management of change.
This program is designed for learners who aspire to play leadership roles in the public sector, in 3rd sector organizations, and in community-minded businesses. The MBA in CED aims to develop a new generation of leaders who have strong business management capabilities, well developed collaborative and interpersonal skills, and deep understanding of accountability, social responsibility, and development issues and practices. Graduates are equipped with the knowledge and skills to make a difference in leading organizations in an increasingly global community and interconnected economy.
The needs of society are always changing and CBU’s size and governance structure enables us to adapt curriculum in a timely fashion to meet the evolving requirements of learners and organizations. The special appeal of the MBA in CED is evidenced by the demand for this program in different parts of Canada. Besides the CBU campus in Sydney NS, the MBA in CED program is also being delivered in Edmonton AB (via Lakeland College) and in Kingston ON.

CBU’s commitment to superior educational experiences is also evidenced by the programs put in place to prepare students for the MBA program. The MBA PreCore program runs for a week before classes start, and it is aimed to students who have not completed a business undergraduate program. The PreMBA program runs for eight weeks, and it is aimed to international students who are interested in improving their communication and analytical skills, and achieving satisfactory scores on GMAT.
Flexible Delivery The special nature of the MBA in CED program attracts students from across Canada and the world, and it is delivered in different ways: - Modular program delivery, in intensive sessions in the month of July on CBU’s campus, in Sydney, NS. Students attend classes for 4-5 courses on campus, and complete assignments and class papers by the end of November. The program can be completed over a 24 month period, by attending classes on campus in July only. - Full-time program delivery, over the Fall and Winter semesters on CBU’s campus. The program can be completed over a 12 month period, by attending all classes on campus, on full-time basis. - Weekend format, part-time delivery on site in Edmonton AB (via Lakeland College) and in Kingston ON. The program can be completed over an 18-month period, by attending classes on site on selected weekends only.
Strong expertise CBU has a strong base of expertise in management and community economic development. The university has been delivering undergraduate business degrees for over 30 years, and has been offering the MBA in CED degree since 1997. CBU’s business graduates have placed well over the years in professional accreditation exams.
Cape Breton produced some of the most successful economic development practitioners, and CBU has held a consistent focus on the region’s economic and cultural growth.
